For many of you I believe this will be the most important chapter you will read in this book! Beyond the science and informative facts you will discover a deeper meaning to your thoughts around food. Everything starts in the mind and when you can shift that, transformation happens.

Let’s begin with a few facts on how food affects your mood…

According to a 2010 study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, extreme dieting affects the way the brain and body respond to stress. When you withhold food, your body produces more cortisol, a stress hormone that can cause excess fat to accumulate around the waistline—and may also cause you to have less resistance to depression and other emotional issues. Going on diet after diet can be especially damaging because repeating this pattern of withholding food for long periods conditions your subconscious.

With time, such behavior can cause the brain to respond to stress by triggering emotional eating or an unhealthy attachment to food. And so, year after year, those who fail with diet after diet fall into a destructive pattern, like a hamster spinning its wheel but getting nowhere. For me, I developed an emotional attachment to food, reaching for doughnuts or cookies in times of stress.

For me, I developed an emotional attachment to food, reaching for doughnuts or cookies in times of stress. I will never forget the day I ate an entire dozen Krispy Kremes in about fifteen minutes. I remember a feeling of numbness and nausea coated with a sticky sweet glaze. I am not sure which felt worse the heaviness in my stomach or the heaviness in my heart from guilt. Other days, piles of Nutter Butter wrappers could be found stashed in my car. There was something so comforting about fat and sugar mixed together in that shiny red wrapper. And so, year after year, those who fail with diet after diet fall into a destructive pattern, like a hamster spinning its wheel but getting nowhere. Can you see how food affects you mood?
